I’ll start of by saying that I never understood the advantages of reading books until I turned 25 years old.

In fact, I hated reading books for most of my life. I found reading books to be boring, and in some cases a form of torture. My mother spent years telling the important of reading, but nothing ever stuck. However, as I got older, I started to discover the advantages of reading books. I began to realize that all of the problems that we face in our daily lives, someone before had the same problems and wrote about them in a book.

What Are The 3 Biggest Advantages Of Reading Books?

There are many wonderful benefits that reading provides, but I’ll only list a few. If you are like me, you don’t like to be preached to, so don’t worry. I’ll give it you in a light-hearted way. No pressure. Here we go!

1) Expand Your Vocabulary

advantages of reading books- expand your vocabulary

One of the biggest advantages of reading books is that it helps you to learn new words. The reason why reading facilitates such learning is because it presents words in their proper context. A much more effective form of learning, rather than simply combing through a dictionary to learn funky looking words that you may never use or even remember the definition of. The larger your vocabulary, the greater the chances you have at accesses new knowledge.

Here’s what I mean. The more words you know, the easier it will be for you to read or even listen to people discuss complicated subject matters because complexity solicits a more sophisticated form of communication. Essentially what I’m saying is, when someone uses a couple of big words in a row, you won’t be lost in translation.

Having a large vocabulary also allows you to communicate a lot easier when you speak with people because you will have a plethora of words at your disposal to help ease you through a conversation without getting bogged down by thinking of words to articulate your ideas.

2) Change The Way You Think

Herein lies another and not so obvious advantage of reading books. Reading allows you to experience how other people think through their writing. It’s actually a surreal experience because you get to process information from another person’s perspective while being self-aware of your own. It creates a sort of parallel consciousness. Okay, getting too preachy. I digress.

The key benefit of understanding how others think is this, it helps you relate to other people a lot easier than the person who doesn’t do much read. For example, if you read books on business, science-fiction, philosophy and cooking, you will gain the ability to relate to people who share those areas of interest and communicate with them more freely. The second benefit of reading is that you will also increase your knowledge in the areas aforementioned. So, choose a wide variety of books to read as well.

3) Improve Your Career

advantages of reading books- Improve your career

This may be the biggest benefit I have discovered about reading books. My life has been totally transformed due to my rediscovery of reading. In the last five weeks or so, I have read about five different books on business. The results have been staggering for our business. I have read books on writing, email marketing, advertising, wealth management, google analytics to name a few. Every single book that I have read, I have been able to apply the information directly into my business.

This is the final key to reading. Whatever book you decide to read, try to make sure that the information you are learning is applicable to your life. If you can somehow learn to apply the information you are putting into your brain, it’ll work wonders for you. I think reading books just for the sake of reading books is a form of play. I believe that you should read things that you can apply because you then begin to own the information you have, rather than passively knowing it. Too preachy.

So, I’ll end with this. Let’s do a thirty day challenge. I challenge you to ready two books in the next thirty days and comment below on what you learned! Good luck and start reading!
